Please join us for a Round Table titled "Stone/Image, Air/Suspension, Body/Improvisation: Experiments in Contact and Composition."
Lunch provided. Please RSVP if you plan to attend.
How to approach the speed of stone, the weight of air, the extending of a body? What emerges in contacts of image, text, movement, and suspension? Join Hugh Raffles, Joe Dumit, and Tim Choy for a conversation about experiments in form, submission, and surprise -- the surprises that the empirical conjures out of your attention, your body, your words, your pages, and your mediums. Openness to that conjuring forms a condition for experiment. Iterating reveals the work of composition. We'll begin with brief presentations of forays into writing, visualization, and study, and the specific compositional problems they address. Then we'll see what happens.
Hugh Raffles is Professor of Anthropology at the New School for Liberal Arts (New York).
Tim Choy is Director and Associate Professor of Science & Technology Studies and Associate Professor of Anthropology at UC Davis.
Joe Dumit is the Director of the Institute for Social Sciences (ISS) and Professor of Science & Technology Studies and of Anthropology at UC Davis.
