California STS Workshop on Translation and Innovation

Greetings, we are happy to announce the second experimental STS retreat! Headlands Institute Flyover

The “California STS Workshop on Translation and Innovation” will be held July 9-11 (all-day Wednesday to Friday) again at the Marin Headlands Institute, a beautiful location on the beach just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. It looks like many faculty will be able to attend and we hope 40-60 graduate students as well (last year we had 39 grads and 6 faculty).

It will feature STS research into the nature of innovation as well as STS as a form of Innovation Studies. Translational Research has been a growing buzzword for a decade and today can be seen in the increasing pressure to make research “valuable” from the get-go. Therefore the changing nature of value in research is a key field for our research.

A preliminary agenda includes 3 faculty-run research practicums on Innovative Methods in STS Research; grad 1-page proposal/prospectus feedback groups; topical theoretical discussion break-out groups; and practical working groups on innovation, translational research, grants, and teaching. This will not be a standard conference with paper presentations, but there will be multiple opportunities to have your work discussed. And it is a fabulous way to get to know the faculty and grads in STS across California.

Logistics: The wonderful advantage of the Marin Headlands is that $75/day or $225 total provides dorm room sleeping and three excellent organic meals. We are in the process of raising money, and ideally you will only have to arrange your own transportation. (Last year many people commuted from the Bay Area as it is only about 30 min from most locations).

At the moment what we need from you is a commitment to attend since we need to give the Headlands an accurate headcount a month in advance and are financially responsible for that count. So if you would like to attend, please let us know as soon as possible (by June 2 at the very latest), and to make our job less nerve-wracking we are asking for a $25 Registration. We think we will be able to raise the rest of the money so this is all you will need to pay; if we can’t then we’ll offer you a choice to participate by paying more (no more than $150 for three days) or getting your registration back.

Email us your intent and ideas, and send your $25 registration made out to "UC Regents" to:
