What can you do with a degree in Science and Technology Studies?

 

STS majors can customize their course selections in order to gain the preparation they need for a wide range of careers, from education, research, and public service, to law, business, and medicine. Regardless of their course selections, all majors develop the ability to draw from fields across the humanities and social sciences in order to analyze how science, technology, and medicine shape—and are shaped by—society. 

  • Education and Research
  • The STS major prepares students to pursue careers in fields that emphasize research, innovation, and teaching. The STS major also prepares students who wish to pursue advanced degrees in the social sciences, the humanities, the natural sciences, or the information sciences.

  • Law and Public Policy
  • STS majors can take a wide range of courses that will prepare them for law school and public policy graduate programs. STS courses enable students to gain in-depth knowledge of issues such as:

    - Privacy and social media
    - Business and Innovation
    - Courts and scientific evidence
    - Health policy
    - Intellectual property and science
  • Medicine and Public Health
  • The STS major pairs well with the application requirements for medical, public health, and nursing school. STS students can take in-depth courses on the social issues surrounding health and medicine while, at the same time, using the major to satisfy many of their pre-professional science, humanities, and social science requirements. Our courses prepare students to address issues such as:

    - Global issues health and medicine
    - Environmental ethics and politics
  • Government, Public Service, and Non-Profit Work
  • STS students interested in government and non-profit work can incorporate internships and on-campus work into their major, thus developing the skills needed to work in a wide range of government agencies and non-profit organizations.
