About

Carl Stahmer is Executive Director of the UC Davis DataLab and an affiliated faculty member in the English Department and the Science and Technology Studies Department. He is also a member of the faculty of the Rare Book School at the University of Virginia. His research is focused on the development and application of digital approaches to bibliography and print history, with a particular focus on the early modern period. He has served as the Associate Director of the English Broadside Ballad Archive (EBBA) since its inception in 2003, in which capacity he oversees the archives digitization efforts, website, and development analytic technologies. Most recently, his scholarly work on the archive has focused on the application of image recognition technologies to develop a comprehensive catalog of early modern woodblock impressions and the application of text mining algorithms to produce a generalized topic model of early modern discourse. 

Stahmer has been working in the computational and digital humanities since the early 1990s, when he co-founded the Romantic Circles website for which he served as the technical lead and Co-General Editor for the next ten years. He has also served as the lead developer for an ongoing Mellon funded initiative to re-design the English Short Title Catalogue as an exemplar 21st century library catalogue, as the Technical Director for the Advanced Research Consortium, and he contributed to the early development of the Zotero platform.  His work has been funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the University of California Humanities Research Institute, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the British Society for Eighteenth Century Studies.
